My new Job, and what has become of my life… in Mumbai

July 31, 2008

I mentioned in my previous post that I finally got a job in Mumbai. I was job hunting in Mumbai for almost a month. The job market was really down so I manage to get only 2 interviews in that one month. I gotta blame the US recession, stock market crash, rising inflation, rising crude prices, etc etc for that, coz I was searching for a job in Finance, specifically in Asset Management or Investment Banking. The fact that I’m just a BBM graduate and no work experience also didn’t help.

Now I have got a job as a Relationship Manager. The company I will be working in is Brain Point Investment, Mumbai. The got the Best Financial Advisor, West Zone for 2008, fron CNBC not bad I say!! Job profile will be in sales, basically I gotta meet clients, tell them about MFs, Insurance and somewhat advise them where they can invest their hard earned money. I was hoping to get into research but, I know I’m not qualified for that job profile. Also everyone needs to be a good salesman, where else can I learn better than at a financial advisory firm. So I kinda like the job and am looking forward to join on Monday.

Now the sad part is the salary, I will be getting just 8k a month. Fucking 8000 bucks!!!!! thats all. This hardly covers my rent, I’m paying 6500 for accommodation(Will talk abt this later) only. Then food, laundry, travell…. damn! I have to live off on my parent’s money for some time despite having a job. That Sucks… But there’s hope, My salary might be “REVIEWED” after 3 months. So there’s hope…

Now the accomodation. It would be an understatement to call it hell(although I’m an atheist and dnt believe that heaven or hell exist). I’m living as a paying guest with a gujju family in Lallubhai Park area, Andheri(W), Mumbai. The area is good, the room is not that bad, room-mates are ok, its a bit costly, but all of these are fine with me.

Now the worse part is, the family is from Gujarat, and also Bhrahmin. If u haven’t guessed it yet, I can’t eat non-veg or drink or smoke in the room. Well I’m trying to quite smoking(for the 8th time now) so a ban on smoking is actually good. Now being not able to order a non-veg pizza is a problem. Ban on drinking is a BIG problem.

If I was in bangalore, I would have got wasted with cheap alcohol(real Old Monk) the night I got my first job. But in Mumbai I celebrated the day, watching a saas-bahu serial with the landlady…. This is what has become of my life. Is this what people call “struggle” for success.

Now the search for new place to stay starts…………

Bangalore to Mumbai…

July 28, 2008

Ok folks.. M now living in Mumbai. I wanted to wrk in the field of finance and which could be a better place than Mumbai. This place is awesome. I bet everyone of u have heard of the mumbaikar’s hard working attitude, the city that never sleeps, blah blah blah… But u get the vibe once u are here, and its amazing. It motivates even lazy farts like me to work harder.

Before coming here a friend told me “mumbai either makes you or breaks you”… I gotta admit – i was almost broken, thought abt returning to the slow paced life of bangalore more a dozen times. But my better sense prevailed and i took “job hunting” a bit more seriously. Now i finally got a job that i want, a job that i look forward to join, a job in the field i always wanted.(The rather low salary didnt bother me much as my main objective, as of now, is to learn. Well, more abt the job later.

I do miss Bangalore though(to hell with bengaluru, to me its still bangalore and will remain thus). My friends there(i hardly have any here), the “ralaxed and chilled out” way of life, the weather… And lotsa other things..

Now i’m staying alone in a PG in Andheri West, paying more that what I’ll be earning per month, hoping that, like those millions who comes to mumbai every yr, i’ll achieve what i came here for.
